L’AlqueriaLab and the UCV Analyze the Distribution of Injuries in Professional Basketball

Valencia Basket, through its innovation department L’AlqueriaLab, and the Catholic University of Valencia (UCV) have conducted a new study focused on analyzing the injury burden in professional basketball. The research, published in the scientific journal BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation, offers a complementary perspective for understanding the impact of injuries by analyzing not only how many occur but also how days lost to injury are distributed throughout the season.

 

The results point to a key insight: not all injuries have the same impact on player availability. Although they accounted for only 10% of the total, five injuries accounted for half of the season’s days of absence. Likewise, 36% of the injuries accounted for 80% of the injury burden, demonstrating that a small proportion of injuries accounts for a significant portion of athletes’ time out of action.

 

Beyond the results, the value of the study lies in its practical application. Incorporating an analysis of the distribution of the injury burden can complement traditional incidence indicators and offer a more comprehensive view to guide strategies for injury prevention, planning, and management.

 

This study strengthens the collaboration between L’AlqueriaLab and the UCV in the field of applied research on elite basketball, helping to generate useful knowledge to improve decision-making in professional sports.
