Albert: "The way the season has gone, it's great to play these games for promotion"

The Valencia Basket's subsidiary team faces from this Sunday the semifinal of the playoff for promotion to LEB Gold. A round-robin elimination in which the winner gets the ticket to the second category of Spanish basketball. After starting the debut season in LEB Silver with a 0-7 record, coach Xavi Albert assesses how his team arrives to this unexpected semifinal.

 

The coach indicates that "after the beginning that we had marked by the dynamics, that the boys had to be with the men’s team and the acclimatization to a new category more demanding, harder and that we did not know. We paid a bit of a price for this new competition. As the season turned out, it was a pleasure to be able to play these two games for promotion".

 

The absence of pressure and enthusiasm have been key to this success. In Albert's opinion, "the players have played with the same enthusiasm since the beginning of the year, but the tables, their own progression due to their age makes them more consistent in competing, but the enthusiasm and the will to play the way they play has been maintained since the beginning of the year in these moments of playoff where everything you play all or nothing in two games, this brazen way of playing has probably helped us".

 

Some of them have had the opportunity to play quality minutes with the men's team, especially Guillem Ferrando and Millán Jiménez. Although at times it was hard for the second team not to count on these players, in the long run it has even been beneficial: "They are at an age where they are improving day by day. Everything they work on, all the experiences they get from competing with people of the highest level as our men’s team is reflected in them, in their game, and in what they transmit to their teammates who are in continuous dynamics of LEB Plata. Whether it is Silver, whether it is acb, that they take advantage of the competitive spaces to be better players".

 

The rival for that ticket to LEB Gold is Albacete Basket, whom they know quite well. The coach recalls that "regardless of the fact that we won both regular league games, we expect games of maximum demand. We are considering them as the two most difficult games of the season. The first game we won in G8 was against Albacete and it is a way that motivates us to go back there to close the season".
