Valencia Basket will repeat this year its third consecutive participation in the EuroLeague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament, once again having L'Alqueria del Basket as one of the venues, and also keeping Xavi Albert as coach of the junior team that participates for the third year in a row. For him the key is that Valencia Basket can have continuity in the tournament in the coming years so that all U-18 taronja players have the opportunity to play at the highest continental level within their category.
The coach takes made an evaluation of previous editions: “It’s a very nice tournament, being able to host one of the venues here, having the best clubs in Europe here and the boys being able to play against the highest level that we can find in the U18 category. The first year we participated after many years of not being able to play it, we entered with great enthusiasm, without many pretensions beyond competing to the fullest. We have one of the most beautiful tournaments that we have been able to play, being able to win at home”.
Last year, the taronja team stayed at the gates of the final after falling in a very tight final against Unicaja and finally the team got third place. In this season, given the current situation, Albert considers that the great news is that it can be disputed: "Given the few competitive situations that we are seeing this year, it will be a success to be able to play it."
The coach sees first-hand how the U-18 youth live this tournament: “With enthusiasm. They don’t consider this beyond the fact that it is one of the great moments of the year. They have the Spanish Championships at the end of the season, although this year all national and international championships were suspended or postponed. I think ANGT is that moment during Christmas when the final state level championships are a long way off and then they experience it like a party. For some of them it is the highest point of competition they have been able to experience”.
The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague remembers every year which players are currently playing in the competition and who participated in the tournament in their U-18 stage. An aspiration for any player who goes through the ANGT. Albert believes that “they’re very aware of how difficult it is to reach the elite. What I do think is a mirror for them. Saying that all these players have gone through this type of tournament and is the maximum point of being able to face this type of player. Since the reference clubs in Europe participate, the players are now a reference in youth categories. You think they have played and reached the elite, but if I don't reach that elite level, I will play against the elite. It’s a real stimulus for them”.
Albert's junior team will experience a generational leap this year. Some players who participated in the two previous editions such as Guillem Ferrando or Millán Jiménez, current members of the EBA squad, will no longer play the tournament. The coach explains how this change is experienced: “The first season we had 6 first-year boys, then the transition between one year and another there were many players who were able to hook those two participations. I think it’s a natural step that happens and I hope it can be played for many years. There will be generations that will change, players with a certain physique and characteristics, but the important thing is that we can celebrate it, that we are lucky enough to do it here and that generation after generation all the U-18 players that we have in the club have the opportunity to play it”.
