Plaza: “Historically my teams have been good defenders and rebounders”

The training days for coaches of the Basketball Chair with the University of València and the support of Caixabank continue in L'Alqueria in 2022. The main court hosted the sixth clinic of this season with the renowned coach Joan Plaza. This clinic -online and face-to-face- was followed, as usual, by coaches from the Valencian Community and other parts of Spain and even abroad.

 

Plaza, from 1977 to 2000, coached in all Spanish youth categories and his first steps in the elite were as assistant coach at Joventut Badalona and Real Madrid. He made the leap to head coach at Real Madrid and then moved on to Cajasol Sevilla, Zalgiris Kaunas, Unicaja Malaga, Zenit St. Petersburg and Real Betis. He participated in eight Euroleagues and four Eurocups, being the first Spanish coach to play the Euroleague outside Spain. In addition to all this, he has an extensive track record: two Leagues (Spanish and Lithuanian), two Eurocups (playing three finals with three different teams) and a Supercup in Lithuania.

 

On the need for coaches to be constantly learning, Plaza believes that "when one bets on this profession never stops learning or should not, in any case. It's not just the new generations, big data or psychological issues, at all levels you have to be constantly recycling and pedaling. The fact that there are people who are interested from a young age is a very good sign because they show above all an attitude of wanting to learn and improve".

 

The coach's presentation was about "Vital in defense and rebounding priorities". Plaza explained the reason for choosing this topic: "We all have a past and historically my teams have been good defenders in Europe and Spain, good rebounders, especially on offense. I also come from having been in the Joventut school in youth teams, so it is a way of saying what is basic for you. In my case, in particular, nothing of what I explain today is something that I don't do in training, even with the pros. I am one of those who wants to win every Sunday, but I also want each player to improve and even at the risk of them going to a better team at the end of the season".

 

Valencia Basket created this year the Coach Experience, showing the Club's methodology through a training session of one of its teams. This activity took place with Ramón Congost, who showed one of his training sessions with the Infantil B Boys: "Everything that involves sharing knowledge is positive. For us also to get out of the bubble and on a training day to be able to share and discuss with other coaches is always very productive for everyone. The sessions are divided into a part of individual technique, today it was shooting. It's one of the most important parts, that the guys have the best shooting mechanics possible."

 

The key for Congost in the work at this stage is "to start showing them what collective play is. Mini-basketball is a faster and more individual game, in which spaces and basketball concepts are not worked on as much. From U13 onwards, they start to see the first touches of what is a more organized basketball".
