Vives: "The EuroLeague Basketball ANGT is an almost professional experience that you'll always remember"

The Adidas Next Generation Tournament is a time of year when U18 players who are lucky enough to enjoy it mark it on the calendar. The youths, who are close to their senior stage, dream of professional basketball hoping to be one of those players who once participated in the tournament and now compete in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. In the case of Valencia Basket, good examples are Klemen Prepelic, Vanja Marinkovic and Guillem Vives. The Spanish guard remembers his experience and advises the taronja players who are going to participate this year for the first time. L’Alqueria del Basket will host its third consecutive edition from December 27 to 29.

Vives played the ANGT with Joventut de Badalona in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. He remembers it as a “time that everyone expected. Then the tournament was played at Hospitalet, close to home, but we competed against the best teams of the Spanish territory and then came teams from abroad, which always was exciting. With nerves knowing that it was an important tournament, at least in Badalona it was given importance. I wasn’t lucky enough to compete very well in my two years but it’s an almost professional experience for 18 year olds that you always remember”.

Repeating for the third year in a row at the taronja facilities means that Valencia Basket will complete its third consecutive participation. The Spanish player considers that it’s “very good for players, being able to play tournaments like this with different teams that you meet on a daily basis or in the Spanish Championships motivates. You see the level your team is at and how you progress is throughout the year. Valencia Basket is competing very well. In my time I know that Valencia Basket wasn’t in its best moments but now I see that they are competing to win the tournament and that speaks highly of how the youth academy is working here”.

In the U18 stage, it could be considered that there is a turning point in which the players begin to look towards the professional team of their club. Vives explained that “at that time you already lack that little step to be a senior, in my case there were mates who already played with the men’s team and who trained with them”. However, the point guard reminds that you always have to keep your feet on the ground: “It’s true that the pressure that some players put on for that tournament saw that they could take their toll. I wouldn’t like a tournament of these characteristics not to be enjoyed because they’re thinking about what will mark their career or give it more importance than it has, although it is important”.

For the participants in the ANGT, players like Vives are a mirror in which to look at themselves and face those players who are already starting to emerge and plays with a professional team is another incentive: “I remember there were players who trained with the men’s team or that there were players who had competed, for example, in the Euroleague or the Endesa League. Playing against those types of players also motivates. Facing a point guard or a shooting guard, in my case, who had already debuted in the Endesa League and being able to have him in the tournament is an attraction and motivates competing against them”.

“In Valencia Basket things are doing well because, for example, Guillem Ferrando or Millán Jiménez are already coming with us, the youths who come up see the door of the men’s team a little more open. Step by step. They are growing. That tournament didn’t mark their career nor will it mark them, but it has helped them to have the doors open with the men’s team and from then on when they open that door for you, you have to have luck, work and chance to consolidate there. The good thing is that many players who have played these tournaments, in the end they have arrived", said the taronja point guard about another of the motivations for young players.

Vives gives advice for tournament participants, especially those who play it for the first time: “Enjoy it and get that competitive gene that may be during the league and in the months before the Spanish Championships arrive, which are different. Now they have the calendar set to compete to the maximum against the best, see what level they are at and test themselves against players, whether they are from here or abroad. What I remember the most is the competitiveness of the tournament, we all wanted to win, the importance we gave it at the time and the anger that we felt not winning it. It is an important tournament but you have to enjoy it because if after time you remember this tournament because of the pressure you had because of the importance it was given, it is worse. You have to go with the mentality of doing well and having fun”.
