Finishes the 2nd psychology course: "In L'Alqueria we are beginning to have an identity as global coaches"

L'Alqueria del Basket is a training space at all levels. Both for players, from the youngest to the seniors, and for coaches. Valencia Basket has been betting on the training of its coaches for several years with the open days, but last year took a step further internally by initiating a psychology course for coaches of L'Alqueria del Basket. The course, organized by the Personal Development Department, is led by Paco Pardo and is under the umbrella of the Club's Values Project. This week has ended the second course with a great success towards the goal of having more and more global coaches.


Pardo said that "we have achieved that these first coaches who had a training based on more psychological aspects related to the players, now have it with a series of variables that have to do with both players and themselves". Some of the topics covered in this second course are emotional aspects of how they have to express themselves by managing their own emotions, as well as taking into account those of the players; stress or conflict resolution at the level of communication, among others. 


Going into details of match preparation, Pardo explained that the focus was on "how you prepare a game when the previous week you won by a lot or when you play against a very strong opponent, or how the coach handles a time-out in a game in different situations. How do you solve a situation when the opposing team has made you a partial of many points ... situations that put the coach in question and has to take an even-handed stance in all their behaviors". 


Coaches like Manolo Real, who directs the U16 A women's team, have already been able to enjoy the two psychology courses. The experienced coach assesed that thanks to this type of training "L'Alqueria coaches begin to have a hallmark as global coaches, more outside than inside the court. This course is teaching us all to try to manage the groups better, to try to help everyone. Trying to find the constant improvement of each one of us. For a long time we had to look for that information outside but now L'Alqueria is giving us all this comprehensive training to be better coaches. The spirit of trying to be better to be able to help the kids better". 


The first course has been carried out by those coaches who came to L'Alqueria del Basket this season. This is the case of Lydia Muñoz, assistant coach of U14 A female team and coach of a School team, who valued very positively her participation in this course: "Keeping a coach trained both in psychology and in clinics helps the learning of the players. There are several units such as motivation or communication, which is something that is not taken into account many times and this course gives you many practical cases that until you don't read it you don't realize that it can happen. For me it is a luxury to be able to have so much training".
