U16 Women's team A: two historic generations of Spanish Champions

What the Women's team A of Valencia Basket did is something that will remain for history. Last season the taronja team lifted the first Spanish Championship in the more than 30 years of life of the Club. This season, with a different generation, the team has repeated the title. Repeating coaching staff with Manolo Real at the head and only two players who played the first -Awa Fam and Lucia Rivas-, this year has come the double.

 

The coach admitted that having won two consecutive Spanish Championships "is amazing, with two totally different generations and in two different situations. In last year's team we were only Lucía Rivas, Awa Fam and the coaching staff (with Pepa Peralta, Juan Carlos García and Josep Galán). It is incredible to be able to continue helping the club grow. My main idea of these titles is the demonstration that the sum of all of us who work in L'Alqueria makes that we can compete at the first level. Then you can win or lose, but luckily we have taken both titles and it is history for the Club".

 

The player Julia Sarrió assured that "we are all super proud to have achieved the goal we set ourselves at the beginning of the season". Mirembe Twehamye added that this success is the result "of all the work we have done during the season and all the effort we have put in". Real agreed in his satisfaction with "how the players have grown during the year and how they have applied everything we have worked on. Since August 23 what I can say about them is that the sports education, the work and the intensity has been so beast that we have reached this far".

 

Although the team won this last Championship with solvency, it would not have lifted the title had it not been for a winning triple by María Sánchez in the quarterfinals against Movistar Estudiantes at the buzzer. The coach explained that "we prepared that game very well and it came out with that touch of luck that is needed to win tournaments. Luck is always accompanied by believing in what you are doing and this triple was made by María as it could have been made by any other player and we had it". Twehamye admitted that "we had a planned play but it didn't go the way we thought it would. When Maria made the shot the whole pavilion stood still and when we started to scream we went to hug each other and I ended up on the floor crying with joy and emotion".

 

After that victory, the team was strengthened towards the next rounds. Victory in the semifinals against Real Canoe by 47 points and in the final against Spar Gran Canaria by 15. Sarrió indicated that "the best teams in Spain are going there and that is the goal you set for yourself. When you manage to win the Championship it is the reward for the work of the whole season". Twehamye shared with her teammate that "we wanted to go to the Championship and win it. When we realized that we had achieved it, it was a moment of great joy". And no wonder. Another generation of U16 players that make history in Valencia Basket.
