During the first week of February, the boys and girls of the first teams of the infantile category have been able to enjoy an explanation, theoretical and practical, by Celia Maestre and David Casinos about Goalball, the only Paralympic sport created specifically for blind or visually impaired people.

 

The four-time Paralympic champion in shot put and discus shared with the players his knowledge about the sport born in Germany in 1946 and which has been part of the Paralympic Games since Arnheim 1980. This sport is practiced by people with different degrees of visual impairment, who wear a mask that completely prevents them from seeing. The aim is to introduce a ball with a rattle in a goal 9 meters away, and guarded by the 3 opposing players.

 

After a previous talk in which the athletes learned the basic rules to be taken into account during the exercise of the sport, the conductors of the activity went on to challenge the stability of the players with balance exercises with their eyes covered by the mask. After this small contact, the children put into practice everything they had learned to enjoy this sport.

 

David Casinos and Celia Maestre managed to fascinate the Valencia Basket juniors with their story of overcoming. Both are a true reflection of sacrifice, work and perseverance, translated into an impeccable sports career with gold medals in the Paralympic Games in Sydney, Athens, Beijing and London.

 

This third session is part of the new social program, carried out by the Personal Development Area of L'Alquería del Basket, which seeks to train the components of the entity in different aspects and difficulties that they may face during their personal and sporting life.
