Valencia Basket is entering the final stretch of its first season in Liga U, the new U22 competition organized by the FEB and the ACB. This Saturday, Gonzalo Muinelo’s team will face Gran Canaria in a play-in game to secure a spot in the Final 6 in Burgos, where the champion of the first edition of Liga U will be crowned. Valencia Basket will have the home-court advantage at Fonteta, the venue for this single-game playoff, which will take place at 12 p.m. Admission is free, but the game can also be watched live on the @LigaU22 YouTube channel.

 

It has been a long season, beginning with a first phase in which the Taronja team competed in Group A but was unable to maintain its division status. With a 4-10 record, they had to play a play-out to determine whether they would remain in Group A or move to Group B, but they fell in a close game against Burgos Grupo de Santiago. Consequently, they played the second phase in Group B. It was a flawless run in which Valencia Basket finished as the undefeated leader with a 12-0 record, qualifying them for the play-in that grants access to the Final 6—which replaces the traditional playoffs—where the champion of this inaugural edition of the Liga U will be decided.

 

In this play-in, Valencia Basket will face Gran Canaria, which finished the second phase in Group A in sixth place with a 6-8 record. It will be the first time the two teams have faced each other, as the Las Palmas team was in Group B during the first phase of the competition.

 

If they win this game, the Taronja team will travel to Burgos, where the Final 6 will be held from May 15 to 17. In this format, the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final are single-game matches played on consecutive days. Valencia Basket would face Casademont Zaragoza in the quarterfinals on Friday, May 15.
