L'Alqueria del Basket hosted last Sunday a very special training day of the Basketball Chair. A day not only for coaches, but also for referees, offered as always with the support of CaixaBank and, on this occasion, also with the collaboration of Europrobasket, which was totally free and in person. The experienced referee Luigi Lamonica was the guest and more than 110 people attended his clinic in the main court.

 

The Italian is one of the most recognized referees of the European scene in the last decades with more than 25 years in the elite. In 1997 he made his first international appearance at the European Championship. Since then he has also refereed in Euroleague Final Four, World Cups and even Olympic Games. In Italy he surpassed 500 games refereed, until in the 2015/16 season he ended his career having reached the age limit stipulated by the country. From then on Lamonica continued to referee in European competitions until last May, when he announced his retirement at the age of 56, having reached the age limit in European competition.

 

The coach's presentation, which was attended by the players of the Europrobasket Summer League, was on "Interpretations in contact". Lamonica analyzed that it is "one of the most complicated issues for referees. It is very common for players, in their own way, to ask about interpretations. They are very talented players, I don't know if they know the rule for sure and especially the details. Here there are a lot of players coming from the United States, where the rule is different. We try to give them a short message about time and distance, which is a new concept for them. It is difficult to explain and we try with clips. It's not easy to change their habits, but we want to put something in their brains to think about. Then they will probably start to understand the fact that everyone has the right to make mistakes on the court."

 

About the experience of attending these training days, the experienced referee believes that "L'Alqueria is the best space in Europe to be able to share knowledge in all categories of basketball. Referees, players, managers, coaches... We have been in the Euroleague for some years trying to open our doors. We have a common goal: to make the game better. When we succeed in this I think everyone will enjoy it more. We play for the spectators. We have to find a way to go in the same direction in all categories."
