Lucas Marí: “I dreamed of appearing in the Mur dels Somnis with my father in the club of my life”

The 17-year-old Lucas Marí made his debut with the men's team on G9 of the Endesa League against Unicaja at La Fonteta. He will be the eleventh player to inscribe his name in the Mur dels Somnis since its creation. His debut is a historic and unrepeatable event in the history of Valencia Basket. Not only will be the first time that two generations will be on the wall, but also will be the first and the last name. Something that will never happen again. José Manuel Marí, Lucas' father, occupies the first name thanks to his debut in the 1989-90 season. After this event, we sat down to talk with father and son.

 

About the exact moment of his debut, which couldn't have been in a better place, Lucas says that “I was on the bench, we called a timeout and that's when Mumbrú told me to go out on the court, defend and try to make a foul or steal a ball. When he told me that, I got excited and a little nervous. I went out and enjoyed it a lot. I felt at home, everyone cheering me on. At such a special moment, it was appreciated”. His father experienced it from the stands: “It was a very exciting situation. We thought it could be the day and several of us from the family came. We enjoyed it a lot”.

 

Lucas started to train with the professional team in preseason, with which he already had minutes in friendly matches. The player explains that "when I informed him that I was training with the men’s team he told me to work hard and that if there was an opportunity he should take it, but without pressure". José Manuel adds that "for him just the fact of being able to train with the men’s team was a wonderful situation. I told him to try to make the most of it. He was happy, had a good time and learned a lot".

 

Just a couple of weeks ago the official debut took place and with it, father and son put their names on the wall. José Manuel confessed that "it’s a pride to appear in the Mur dels Somnis and that my son appears very much too. It’s a reason to celebrate, but to continue working because this is a very nice step for Lucas, but it is one more step". The young player agreed that "it’s very special and also to do it in a club that has meant so much to us as Valencia Basket".

 

Lucas had no doubt that his best experience in his years in L'Alqueria has been that moment: "Top 1, the first, no doubt. Since I came to the quarry I dreamed of appearing there, also to go out with my father and in the club of my life which is Valencia Basket". His top 3 is closed by "the Minicopa, which was a very good experience (they finished third) and last season with the LEB Plata, reaching the final as we started, which was an example of overcoming very good for the youth teams".

 

This is just the beginning of the dream for Lucas: "Seeing that there are youth players who have reached the men’s team helps to motivate you and to keep working to be where they are. Also, seeing, as in the case of Puerto, who has been there for more years, that he has an important role".

 

Having achieved this, José Manuel advises Lucas "to try to have a longer presence in the club than I had. It will be easy for him to surpass me. He should keep working, because this is a process of growth. He will have good moments, like this one, and others that are not so good, because that's how sport is. He has to keep his head when it's good and when it's bad. He has to keep learning. From home we will support him in everything. He is in a club where he will have a good time. He has to take advantage of it and enjoy it".

 

Lucas is already an example for all the boys and girls of L'Alqueria: "It’s difficult for me to see him like that because I am still very young and I don't have that perspective. When you enter the youth teams you want to be an example for everyone. I am very happy”.
