Valencia Basket had great success at the Spanish U16 Championship. The women’s team defended its title for the second consecutive year—its fourth in history—while the men’s team clinched the bronze with a last-second basket. Lydia Muñoz’s team delivered a stellar performance in the final against Spar Gran Canaria and secured their fourth Spanish Championship title in the last five years. Amelia Alonso was named MVP. Meanwhile, Vicent Revert’s boys matched their best performance in a Spanish Championship with the third bronze medal in men’s history. That makes three medals this year for Valencia Basket, following the bronze in the Spanish U18 Women’s Championship.

 

The girls’ U16 A team kicked off their campaign with a flawless group stage, finishing as group leaders thanks to victories over Cafés Candelas (45-112), Club Náutico Sevilla (48-82), and Casademont Zaragoza (90-51). In the round of 16, they faced Inverse CB Sanfeliuenc, whom they defeated 75-35, and in the quarterfinals, they beat Cesa Femení Sant Adrià 79-59. In the semifinals, they took on Joventut Badalona, whom Lydia Muñoz’s team also defeated 80-54 to return to the Spanish Championship final. There, Spar Gran Canaria awaited them. Valencia Basket built a comfortable lead early on, effectively breaking down the zone defense the Canary Islanders employed throughout the game. At halftime, the lead stood at 19 points. In the third quarter, Spar Gran Canaria stepped up the pressure, but the Taronja squad managed to maintain their lead without ever putting the victory or the gold medal in jeopardy (74-56).

 

The boys’ U16 A team followed a similar path, with a strong group stage that also saw them finish in first place thanks to wins over Insolac CB Alcalá Caja87 2010 (62-108), SPB Prevennova (73-106), and Movistar Estudiantes (97-79). In the round of 16, the Taronja team won a close game against Mefiex Sagrado Cáceres (94-93), and in the quarterfinals they also overcame a tough matchup against Casademont Zaragoza (89-92). In the semifinal, Valencia Basket faced Real Madrid, to whom they fell 113-69. Vicent Revert’s team was looking to secure the bronze medal against Gran Canaria and managed to do so at the last moment. The Taronja squad dominated for three quarters, but the Canarians mounted a comeback in the final quarter. A basket by Szewczyk with 14 seconds remaining secured a last-second victory for Valencia Basket, which closed out the Spanish Championship with a medal (76-75).
