Riera: “The player has to know how to read the right situation when he receives”

The training days for coaches of the Basketball Chair with the Universitat de València do not stop in L'Alqueria del Basket. The main court hosted the third clinic of the 2022-23 season with the Spanish coach Lluís Riera. This day -presential and online- was followed by coaches from the Valencian Community and other parts of Spain and even abroad.


Riera has a degree in Mathematics and Psychology. At the age of 22 he joined as a coach in the youth teams of the Joventut Badalona Club. With the U18 team he was elected best coach in Spain in the 2010-11 season. From 2011 to 2018 he was part of the coaching staff of the men's team, being assistant coach of coaches such as Salva Maldonado, Diego Ocampo or Carles Durán. He then spent a season in Baskonia, where he was assistant coach to Pedro Martínez and Velimir Perasovic. In 2019 he went to Russia to be Joan Plaza's assistant coach at Zenit in the VTB League. In 2020 he returned to Spain to take over the bench of CB Tizona in the LEB Gold League, where he continues.


The coach gave a presentation on "Attack and defense situations in the current 1x1". Riera explained that "I will address the issue of one on one in attack and defense and propose some exercises for coaches to see how I work the one on one. Especially in a situation that is currently being played a lot which is the 'closed out', which is a situation in which a player receives outside the three line and is able to attack. You have to have a shooting threat, but from there you have to know how to manage when he receives and know how to read the right situation".

 

Regarding this type of conferences that enrich the background of the coaches, he assured that "they are very important for us, to be able to share knowledge, to teach how one works. Also L'Alqueria and Valencia Basket with the University do an extraordinary job to spread our knowledge and spread basketball, which is what we all want.
